Thomas Wesley Pentz Jr., known as Diplo, is an American DJ born in Tupelo, Mississippi, raised partly in Miami and established in Philadelphia during his early career. His sets are shaped by broad musical exchange, moving among EDM, trap, hip-hop, pop, moombahton, dancehall and baile funk. He founded Mad Decent in 2006, co-created Major Lazer and later formed Jack Ü with Skrillex, all of which expanded the settings in which he works as a DJ and curator.
A 2004 night at fabric in London, where he met M.I.A., was an early landmark. With Jack Ü, he played a sold-out Madison Square Garden show on 31 December 2014 and closed Ultra Music Festival's main stage in 2015; the project also appeared at Coachella and Lollapalooza São Paulo in 2016. His solo itinerary has included a 2023 Burning Man set played from a hot-air balloon.
Diplo and Friends ran on BBC Radio 1 and 1Xtra until 2021, providing a regular outlet for his selections. He has won two Grammys: Best Dance Recording and Album with Jack Ü in 2016, and Best Dance Recording with Silk City in 2019. Whether in a club, festival slot or unusual outdoor setting, his DJ work is marked by what has been described as high-tech eclecticism.
