What So Not
What So Not, the electronic project of Sydney-based Australian DJ and producer Christopher Emerson, known as Emoh Instead, evolved from a duo with Harley Streten, known as Flume, founded in 2011, into Emerson's solo platform. Active since 2010, What So Not has toured extensively, playing Coachella, Bonnaroo, Ultra Music Festival and Lollapalooza, alongside a 2014 appearance at the North Coast Music Festival in Chicago. In early 2013, What So Not and Flume co-headlined the Massive Universe Tour across venues in Australia, a run that helped establish Emerson's profile before he continued the project independently.
His June 2018 Beautiful Things World Tour of Australia covered Perth, Adelaide, Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane, reflecting a sustained domestic touring base alongside his international festival dates. Known for fast-tempo electro-influenced productions, Emerson has built a reputation as, in the words of one interviewer, unparalleled for his shifting hair color and production tastes alike. What So Not earned a nomination for Live Act of the Year at the 2024 J Awards, recognition tied directly to his performance career rather than solely his studio catalogue.
Emerson continues to release and tour as What So Not, maintaining the project as his primary vehicle within the global bass and future-focused dance music scene.
