Unkle
UNKLE is the project of James Lavelle, an English DJ from Oxford who has held a longtime residency at Fabric in London and built a career spanning club DJing, label work and production. He founded the trip hop and electronic label Mo'Wax in 1992, releasing early work by DJ Shadow and Dr.
Octagon alongside his own UNKLE project, and got his start running the Oxford club night Mo Wax Please while working record store jobs at Bluebird and Honest Jon's. As a DJ, Lavelle has mixed four volumes of the respected Global Underground series along with the inaugural Fabric Live compilation, and his broader mix discography includes sets recorded for Cream Live and Tribal Gathering.
In 2014 he curated and directed London's Meltdown festival, assembling a lineup including Josh Homme, Max Richter, Neneh Cherry and Goldie, capped by a live UNKLE:Redux performance featuring a guest appearance from former collaborator DJ Shadow. UNKLE's studio albums, including Psyence Fiction, Never, Never, Land and War Stories, have run alongside Lavelle's ongoing DJ work, with his Fabric residency remaining a throughline across more than three decades in electronic music.
