Sven Väth is a German DJ whose route into dance music began after a formative 1980 trip to Ibiza. At 17 he started DJing in his parents' English pub in Germany, then took a residency at Frankfurt's Dorian Gray in 1982. That club became a defining early base: it was where he met Michael Münzing and Luca Anzilotti, with whom he formed Off. The group's 1986 single Electrica Salsa sold one million copies, bringing Väth a sudden public profile while he continued to build his identity around the dancefloor.
In 1988 he co-founded Frankfurt club Omen, adding a key venue to his work as a DJ and club figure. His selections draw on techno, trance, ambient techno and new beat, and he has been closely associated with the evolution of German techno. In 1991 he founded both Eye Q Records and Harthouse Records, recording for the latter as Barbarella. He later founded Cocoon Recordings and, in 1999, began the Cocoon Ibiza residency at Amnesia.
The Monday-night residency became a long-running fixture of his DJ calendar. Across clubs, labels and Ibiza nights, Väth has maintained a career centred on extending electronic music's club culture.
