About Stacey Pullen
Stacey Pullen, raised in Detroit, entered the city's techno scene in 1990 and studied directly under Derrick May, who helped refine his sound, production skills and overall approach to the craft. Pullen drew inspiration from May, Juan Atkins and Kevin Saunderson, the trio known as the Belleville Three, while also working alongside Detroit peers Carl Craig and Jeff Mills, positioning his own sound between Craig's futurism and Mills' raw minimalism.
He recorded under aliases including Bango, Kosmik Messenger, X-Stacy and Silent Phase, and secured recording deals with R&S and Plink Plonk, the label run by former Shamen frontman Mr C. His mix album DJ-Kicks: Stacey Pullen appeared on Studio !K7 in 1996, followed by the 2001 artist album Today Is the Tomorrow You Were Promised Yesterday on Virgin's Science imprint, a record that departed from straight Detroit techno toward jazz and funk grooves drawing comparisons to Herbie Hancock.
He later contributed Fabric 14 to the Fabric mix series in 2004 and Balance 028 to the Balance series in 2015, both marks of sustained standing within the international DJ mix circuit. Pullen's incorporation of house and garage elements into a Detroit techno foundation has been cited as an influence on subsequent generations of electronic producers and DJs.
