About Speedy J

Speedy J, born Jochem George Paap in Rotterdam in 1969, is a Dutch techno DJ and producer whose 1992 track "Pullover" contributed directly to techno's early breakthrough in Europe and established the minimal, mechanically precise sound that has defined his career since. Paap started out as a hip-hop DJ, a background that gave him his nickname referencing his speed behind the decks, before moving fully into electronic production and DJing in the late 1980s.

He released material as part of Warp Records' Artificial Intelligence series, aligning him with the influential wave of British and Dutch electronic artists that label assembled during the early 1990s. Rotterdam has remained his base throughout a career now spanning more than three decades, with his productions and DJ sets released through labels including NovaMute and his own Electric Deluxe.

Paap is considered one of techno's first prominent producer-DJs to emerge from the Netherlands, and his continued studio and touring work has kept him active well past the genre's initial breakthrough period. His live and DJ performances remain closely tied to the minimal, ambient-adjacent techno sound he helped pioneer, distinguishing his catalogue from the more industrial strands that developed elsewhere in European techno.
