Satoshi Tomiie — House DJ & Producer

Satoshi Tomiie is a Tokyo-born DJ and producer whose career began as a pianist and jazz musician performing alongside composer Ryuichi Sakamoto before he crossed into house music through a chance commission. A promoter asked him to compose a theme for an upcoming Japanese tour by Frankie Knuckles, and the resulting 1988 meeting between Tomiie and Knuckles led directly to their collaboration on Tears, released the following year and regarded as one of house music's standout anthems; Tomiie has said he wrote the track's instrumental sections in his bedroom, naming it after a piano line that evoked tears rolling down. That partnership brought him into the Def Mix stable alongside David Morales and Hector Romero, placing him at the center of New York's house production scene during a pivotal period for the genre. Tomiie went on to build a career as both a remixer and DJ, playing sets internationally including regular appearances in Japan, such as at Sound Republic, and touring the international house circuit built up by the Def Mix roster. His path from classical and jazz piano into house production and DJing set him apart from many of his Def Mix peers, and his early Knuckles collaboration remains the foundational credit underpinning his standing among house music's formative producer-DJs.
