Royksopp — Ambient & Downtempo Electronic DuoRoyksopp
Röyksopp is the Norwegian electronic duo of Svein Berge and Torbjørn Brundtland, associated with Tromsø and formed in Bergen in 1998 after an earlier project, Aedena Cycle. Although their career is principally that of a live and studio electronic act rather than a traditional club-DJ act, their catalogue moves naturally through ambient, downtempo, chill-out, house and synth-pop. Melody A.M., released in 2001, was their breakout album and sold more than a million copies, establishing the warm, analogue-rich sound that would run through The Understanding, Junior, Senior and The Inevitable End.
Their arrangements have favoured instruments such as the Yamaha CS-80, Mellotron Mk2 and Korg PS-3100, with guest vocalists adding changing voices to a consistent electronic character. The duo returned in 2022 with the Profound Mysteries trilogy, then highlighted the clubbier side of its work with True Electric in 2025 and a world tour that included DJ sets. Earlier live dates included Stockholm, London and Berlin, while 2023 appearances included Bilbao BBK Live and Rock Werchter.
Röyksopp have won seven Spellemannprisen awards, received two Grammy nominations and won the 2002 MTV Europe Music Award for Best Music Video for Remind Me. From Eple's use in an Apple Mac OS X startup video to later DJ-set touring, their work has steadily connected headphone electronica with dance-floor scale.
