Proper Villains
Proper Villains, the name used by Jonathan Shulman, is a New York-based DJ, producer, and multi-instrumentalist whose career traces back to the crate-lugging rave and loft-party circuit of the late 1990s and early 2000s, with a first major break arriving in 2008. His releases have run through labels including Southern Fried, Nightshifters, Flamin' Hotz, and Play Me Records, spanning a catalogue that draws on house, deep house, and dance styles suited to varied club settings.
He delivered an exclusive DJ mix for Insomniac's Metronome series, described by the outlet as a raw, funk-driven, twenty-seven track set spanning house to deep house styles reflective of his East Coast club background. His remix work has included a reworking of Fei-Fei's This Is Our Night, connecting his production credits to the broader trance and progressive-adjacent scene beyond his own house-oriented output.
Proper Villains has continued releasing original material, including the EP Don Dada and tracks such as Galaxia and Stoggaf, sustaining a New York-rooted club and studio career spanning more than two decades. His profile reflects a DJ and producer whose career developed through the underground party scene before extending into label releases and mix series features documenting his ongoing club-facing work.
