Mr. Oizo
Mr. Oizo is the recording and DJ alias of French filmmaker and musician Quentin Dupieux, who began performing music to accompany his own films around age 17 before buying his first synthesiser. In 1997 he released his debut long-player on the F Communications label and adopted the "Mr.
Oizo" pseudonym, drawn from the French word "oiseau," meaning bird. His 1999 track "Flat Beat," composed for a Levi's advertising campaign featuring the puppet character Flat Eric, reached number one on singles charts across multiple European countries, giving Dupieux an unusually mainstream breakthrough for an experimental electronic producer and DJ. Working across French house, techno and experimental electronic styles, he has continued releasing music through labels including Ed Banger Records, Because Music and Brainfeeder, aligning him with some of the more prominent French and international electronic imprints of the 2000s and 2010s.
Dupieux has performed as a touring DJ across his career while maintaining a parallel career as a film director and screenwriter, splitting his creative output between the two disciplines. His DJ and production identity as Mr. Oizo remains distinct from his directing credits, with his electronic music catalogue continuing to circulate within French house and techno DJ circles internationally.
