Moodymann
Moodymann, the stage name of Kenny Dixon Jr., is a Detroit-based DJ and producer who released his debut album, Silentintroduction, in 1997 on Planet E Communications. He owns and runs two record labels, Mahogani Music and KDJ Records, through which he has released the bulk of his own catalogue alongside music from other Detroit-connected artists.
Dixon is also a member of the collective 3 Chairs, a group that has performed and recorded together within Detroit's house scene. His DJ sets and productions draw heavily on soul, funk and jazz samples, reworked into house structures that Red Bull Music Academy has described as blending a precise sampling approach with a broader mission of preserving Black American musical heritage.
Known for avoiding interviews and mainstream press cycles, Dixon has built his reputation largely through his club performances and record releases rather than public visibility, letting his DJ sets and productions speak for a career that has spanned decades within Detroit's underground. His refusal to participate in conventional promotion has reinforced Moodymann's reputation as one of house music's more enigmatic DJ-producers.
