Richard Melville Hall, known as Moby, is an American electronic artist born in Harlem, Manhattan. His wide-ranging musical vocabulary includes electronica, trip hop, house, downtempo, ambient, techno, punk rock and electronic rock. He began in the punk band Vatican Commandos in 1983 before signing to Instinct Records in 1990, and his 1991 single Go reached the UK top 10.
As a DJ and live electronic figure, he ran the New York club nights Degenerates in 2007 and 2008. He also founded and headlined Area:One Festival in 2001, followed by Area2 in 2002 with David Bowie, and headlined the final day of Glastonbury in 2003. Moby's releases include the widely licensed Play, which sold 10 to 12 million copies, and 18, which reached number one in the UK and number four in the United States.
His own imprint Trophy Records operated as a Mute sub-label. A Grammy nomination for Play – The DVD came in 2001. Across club nights, festival ventures and a sound that joins ambient, techno and rock, Moby's DJ-facing history reflects a restless, genre-spanning electronic approach.
