About Mark Farina

Mark Farina is a Chicago-born, San Francisco-based DJ whose career spans more than three decades and two parallel sounds: Chicago house and the downtempo, jazz-inflected style he built through his long-running Mushroom Jazz series. Farina has been touring globally since 1989, and by 2016 was marking 25 years of the Mushroom Jazz series, a body of mix releases running from 1996 to 2016 that established acid jazz and downtempo as a distinct lane within his broader house-DJ identity.

He has performed hundreds of shows a year across his career, at times playing extended sets or working two rooms of the same event with different styles simultaneously, a format he has described as functioning like a modern travelling DJ rather than a single-genre specialist. His discography includes the 1989 release Mood on KMS Records, an early credit that ties him to Detroit techno's KMS lineage even as his primary identity remained rooted in Chicago house.

Farina's steady international touring and consistent content output, including ongoing Mushroom Jazz installments, have kept him active on festival and club bills well past the genres' respective commercial peaks. Decades into his touring career, Farina remains identified primarily with the house scenes of both his hometown and adopted city, bridging Chicago's dancefloor tradition with San Francisco's downtempo and eclectic listening-room culture.
