Major Lazer — EDM, Dancehall & Reggae DJMajor Lazer
Major Lazer are an American EDM and DJ group founded by Diplo and Switch in 2008, whose sound and concept are closely associated with Jamaican dancehall and reggae culture. The group originated in Los Angeles and its current lineup is Diplo, Walshy Fire, Ape Drums and vocalist America Foster. Switch left in 2011, Jillionaire departed in June 2019 and Ape Drums replaced him; America Foster joined in 2025.
Their DJ-focused musical blend incorporates EDM, dancehall, reggae, hip hop, moombahton, trap, reggaeton, soca, rocksteady and electro house. Major Lazer have presented that cross-genre approach at Falls Music & Arts Festival in Lorne, Coachella, Pitchfork Music Festival, Sasquatch Music Festival, Outside Lands and Flow Festival in Helsinki. Their Free the Universe 2013 World Tour ran through spring 2013 with Dragonette, Angel Haze and Lunice supporting.
The group has released through Downtown Records, Mad Decent, Columbia and Secretly Canadian, and their Lazerproof mixtape with La Roux combined rap, R&B, dancehall and dubstep. Their live run later included the closing ceremony of the Milano Cortina 2026 Winter Olympics at Verona Arena. Major Lazer's DJ identity has always depended on connecting Caribbean-derived rhythms with expansive electronic-pop presentation rather than operating within a single dance genre.
