Magda — Minimal Techno DJ & ProducerMagda
Magda, born Magdalena Chojnacka in Zywiec, Poland around 1975, is a DJ and producer. Her family emigrated to Texas and then to Hamtramck, Michigan, near Detroit's Polish community, where she encountered Richie Hawtin DJing at a rave in 1994, an experience she has cited as the turning point that pointed her toward electronic music.
She began working at the Record Time record store and talked her workplace bar into hosting a monthly techno night where Claude Young and Daniel Bell were residents, soon asking her to handle warm-up sets; her first time behind the decks came in 1996, and Hawtin secured her first residency in 1997. She later moved to Detroit, met Hawtin and Marc Houle through a mutual friend, and began producing with Houle and Troy Pierce as Run Stop Restore, released on Hawtin's Minus label in 2003.
Magda issued her first solo material as Magda on Minus in 2005, building a career as a resident and touring DJ within the minimal techno scene associated with the label. She has performed at festivals including Audioriver in Poland and now lives in Berlin, continuing to play internationally as both DJ and Minus-affiliated producer.
