Kruder & Dorfmeister — Downtempo DJ & Production Duo

Kruder & Dorfmeister, the Vienna DJ and production duo of Peter Kruder and Richard Dorfmeister, have defined downtempo since the pair began working together in 1993. Their mix album The K&D Sessions, released in 1998 and now the property of G-Stone Recordings, the label the duo founded, sold more than a million copies and became a fixture of chill-out lounges from Ibiza to New York, helping establish what became known internationally as the Vienna Sound. Both DJs built individual reputations as remixers for artists including Madonna, Depeche Mode and Roni Size, work that ran alongside their entry in the DJ-Kicks mix series, later reissued as a 30th anniversary box set remastered by Bernie Grundman. Dorfmeister has also worked as a DJ and multi-instrumentalist within his separate Tosca project alongside Rupert Huber since 1994, while Kruder has continued to be associated with downtempo sound production and his work behind the decks. The duo marked their 25th anniversary in 2019 with joint performances at Vienna's Konzerthaus, and radio DJ Gilles Peterson has called them the Beatles of the 1990s, reflecting a legacy built as much on their reputation as DJs and remixers as on their own original productions.
