Juan Atkins — Detroit Techno DJ & Producer

Juan Atkins is a Detroit DJ and producer credited as one of the originators of techno, having formed the genre alongside fellow members of the Belleville Three in the early 1980s. Recording as Cybotron and later under the Model 500 name, Atkins helped define the electronic, machine-driven sound that came to be known internationally as Detroit techno, and he founded the Metroplex label to release his own work and that of other Detroit producers. Widely referred to as the Godfather of Techno, he headlined Movement Festival in Detroit in 2022, marking the 40th anniversary of the genre's emergence from the city, a booking that underscored his continued standing as a foundational DJ and producer within the scene he helped create. Atkins has toured internationally for decades, playing techno festivals and clubs that trace their lineage back to the sound he pioneered in Detroit. His catalog of early Cybotron and Model 500 tracks remains a reference point for techno DJs and producers globally, and his Metroplex label has served as a lasting institution within Detroit's electronic music infrastructure.
