Joey Negro was the primary stage name of English DJ and producer David Russell Lee, born 18 June 1964 on the Isle of Wight and raised in Thorpe-le-Soken, Essex, before he retired the Joey Negro name in July 2020. Lee began his career in 1986 working at the label and distributor Smithers & Leigh, building a reputation as a DJ and remixer across disco, soul, funk and house through club dates in Clacton-on-Sea, Chalk Farm and internationally.
His mix and compilation work became central to his DJ identity, spanning The Garage Sound of Deepest New York, Disco Spectrum, Disco Not Disco, Soul of Disco, Back Street Brit Funk, Italo House and Remixed with Love, projects that let him showcase rare disco and house selections for club audiences worldwide. Lee released through his own label Z Records as well as Rough Trade, Nu Groove, Strut Records and Ministry of Sound, building a reputation as one of house music's leading crate-digging DJs and remixers.
Resident Advisor describes him as a master British DJ, producer and remixer who spent close to three decades producing with a focus on the roots of disco and house. Lee continues DJing under his own name following the retirement of the Joey Negro alias.
