James Holden

James Holden is an English DJ and producer whose career began in 1999 when his trance single Horizons, built using the freeware program Buzz, was championed by Pete Tong, John Digweed and Nick Warren and became one of the season's breakout club anthems. Born James Alexander Goodale Holden and educated in mathematics at Oxford, he went on to release singles and remixes through Lost Language, Perfecto and Positiva, and performed as part of the trio Mainline before collaborating with singer Julie Thompson as Holden & Thompson. In 2005 he founded the label Border Community, which became the platform for his own evolving sound and for artists including Nathan Fake, and his DJ sets moved progressively away from typical club structures toward longer, more exploratory journeys blending modular synthesis with dancefloor material. Holden has continued to tour internationally as both a DJ and a live performer, with Border Community's biography noting his many roles across two decades: producer, remixer, DJ, label boss, synth builder and band leader. His trajectory from trance breakthrough to left-field electronic auteur has made him a recurring reference point for DJs seeking a more experimental route through dance music.
