HI-LO

HI-LO is the harder-edged techno alias of Dutch DJ and producer Oliver Heldens, launched in 2015 as a way to explore tech house, UK garage-influenced house, and techno sounds that diverge from his mainstream house output under his own name. The name, a reversal of "Oli H," was quickly linked to Heldens after early hype surrounded the alias's debut release "Crank It Up" on Mad Decent, and he has since used HI-LO to headline techno-focused stages and events distinct from his main-stage house bookings, including sets tied to the Sink The Pink party brand. Heldens has described HI-LO in interviews as pushing boundaries between garage house, bass house, tech house, and drum and bass, giving him a separate creative outlet for underground-leaning material that would not fit his more commercial productions. The alias maintains its own SoundCloud presence and release catalogue, distinct from his primary artist page, supporting a dedicated string of techno and tech-house DJ sets at clubs and festivals oriented toward harder, more functional dance music. HI-LO's continued activity alongside Heldens' main project illustrates a common pattern among dance-music producers of maintaining parallel identities for different audiences and sounds.
