Giorgio Moroder
Giorgio Moroder, the Italian producer whose disco and synth work shaped decades of dance music, began his DJ career surprisingly late, at age 73, with his first-ever DJ set at Deep Space, a Red Bull Music Academy special held at New York's Output club in 2013. That debut launched a genuine late-career run behind the decks rather than a one-off novelty appearance: Moroder went on to DJ at the Electronic Beats Festival in Vienna and at Corona Capital in Mexico, both in 2013, playing sets that mixed his own catalogue with contemporary house and disco-influenced records. The move followed renewed attention to his production work after Daft Punk credited him on Random Access Memories, which pushed a new generation of dance fans toward his back catalogue and created demand for him to present it live. His sets are documented on SoundCloud and in coverage of the Deep Space performance, giving a factual record of a DJ practice built almost entirely in his eighth decade rather than during his 1970s and 1980s production heyday. Moroder's presence in club and festival DJ booths represents an unusual late-life pivot for an artist previously known mainly for studio work.
