Flying Lotus — Experimental DJ & Label Boss

Steven Ellison, who performs as Flying Lotus, is a producer and DJ who runs the Brainfeeder label and has delivered DJ sets and mixes across radio and streaming platforms for more than a decade. He played an Essential Mix in November 2008 that blended hip-hop, electronic, jazz and experimental production into a single set, and he has continued to record mixes for outlets including KCRW's Freeform Friday series, where his June 2020 contribution moved through ambient textures built around his own catalogue. During the pandemic he hosted DJ sets as part of Brainfeeder's Twitch series The Hit, including sets billed as his first live-streamed "Haus" broadcasts and collaborative sessions alongside producer PBDY. His approach to DJing favors long, mood-driven selections over hard mixing, often described as stream-of-consciousness journeys through his own productions and outside influences. As Brainfeeder's label boss, he has used his DJ platform to showcase the imprint's roster alongside his own catalogue, extending a career that began with club and radio sets in Los Angeles before growing into an internationally recognized production and mixing practice under the Flying Lotus name.
