Qbert
Qbert is the performing name of Richard Quitevis, a San Francisco-born turntablist who began DJing at 15 and went on to win the DMC USA title in 1991 before taking the DMC World Championship in both 1992 and 1993. He co-founded the Invisibl Skratch Piklz alongside Mix Master Mike after meeting him at a high school DJ battle, and the crew's routines helped define competitive turntablism through intricate scratch patterns and beat-juggling techniques.
Qbert popularized moves such as the crab scratch and later built his own equipment line, the Qbert Skratchcopy Kit and Thud Rumble mixers, aimed at other battle DJs. His mix work extends into instructional territory through Da Beat Non-Stoppin and Wave Twisters, projects that combined scratch performance with narrative and animation.
Qbert was named America's Best DJ in 2010, a recognition that came two decades into a career built on battling and club sets rather than chart production. He continues to perform at turntablist showcases and DJ festivals worldwide, and remains closely associated with the Bay Area scene where he grew up, having spent his teenage years developing his craft on equipment inherited through the local hip-hop and battle circuit.
