Jazzy Jeff

Jeffrey Allen Townes, known as DJ Jazzy Jeff, built his reputation on scratch and mixing skills in mid-1980s Philadelphia before pairing with Will Smith as DJ Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince. Townes is credited, alongside DJ Spinbad, with helping originate the transformer scratch, a technique that shaped hip-hop DJ practice beyond his own records. He continued playing out long after the duo's commercial peak, becoming a fixture of Philadelphia's DJ scene and touring internationally as a solo turntablist.

Townes founded A Touch of Jazz, a Philadelphia studio and label that doubled as a hub for the city's DJ and production community, and he has hosted globally streamed sets under the Vinyl Destination and PlayList Retreat banners, the latter bringing DJs together for collaborative sessions rather than competitive sets. His annual Playlist Retreat gatherings in South Africa and other locations have become a reference point for DJ culture built around mixing and shared crates rather than headline billing. Townes remains active on the festival and club circuit, often mixing classic soul, funk and hip-hop into extended sets that reflect his crate-digging background.

His influence on scratch technique and turntablism, developed well before his Grammy-winning studio work, continues to anchor his standing among hip-hop DJs.
