Icey
DJ Icey is the stage name of Eddie Pappa, an Orlando-based DJ credited with defining the Florida breaks sound alongside the broader funky breaks movement of the 1990s. Mixmag dubbed him the King of Funky Breaks in 1998, a title that stuck as his sets and productions on Moonshine Records reached multi-platinum sales figures in the American dance scene.
Pappa founded Zone Records in the early '90s, using the label as a platform to release his own DJ tracks and those of like-minded breakbeat producers blending electro, Miami bass, UK breakbeat hardcore and house influences. His Essential Mix appearance helped introduce his sound to a wider international audience beyond the club circuit he had built across Florida.
Pappa's DJ sets have long combined the bass-heavy low end associated with Miami with breakbeat rhythms drawn from UK hardcore, a hybrid approach that separated Florida breaks from its West Coast and European counterparts. Decades after his emergence, Icey remains an active performer and unwavering advocate for breakbeat music, continuing to book club dates and produce new material that keeps the funky breaks sound circulating within its dedicated fanbase.
