David Holmes
David Holmes began DJing in Belfast at fifteen and built his reputation through two club nights he ran at the Belfast Art College in the early 1990s, Sugar Sweet and Shake Yer Brain, which became landmark events for the city's electronic scene during a difficult period in Northern Ireland's history. Orbital's track “Belfast,” from their debut album, was written after the duo played a set at Sugar Sweet, underscoring the night's influence on the wider UK dance scene.
Holmes's first hit as a DJ-producer came via 1992's “De Niro,” released as the Disco Evangelists alongside Ashley Beedle and Lindsay Edwards, before he released his own solo debut, This Film's Crap Let's Slash the Seats, in 1995, an album inspired by movie soundtracks. That cinematic sensibility carried into a long-running composing partnership with director Steven Soderbergh, spanning Out of Sight and the Ocean's trilogy, work that developed alongside his DJ and remix career.
Holmes has remixed for numerous artists and produced albums for Primal Scream and Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds, and he currently performs as part of the band Unloved, whose music features throughout the television series Killing Eve. His trajectory from Belfast club DJ to film composer remains anchored in the same electronic and trip hop foundations he built behind the decks.
