Daft Punk — French House & Electro DuoDaft Punk
Thomas Bangalter and Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo were the French electronic duo Daft Punk, formed in Paris in 1993 from the remains of the band Darlin'. Their performances and DJ-oriented catalogue moved through French house, house, disco, funk, techno, synth-pop and electro, often using extensive sampling and vocoders. From 1999, their robot personas became central to their stage identity, giving their retrospective and futuristic sound an immediately recognisable visual dimension. After Homework in 1997 and Discovery in 2001, they built a reputation for carefully staged live appearances rather than constant touring.
Their first US show was at Even Furthur in Wisconsin in 1996, and they headlined Tribal Gathering in England in 1997 alongside Orbital and Kraftwerk. Coachella in 2006 became another landmark festival date. They also performed with Kanye West at the 2008 Grammys at Staples Center and appeared during Phoenix's Madison Square Garden encore in 2010. Their labels Roulé and Crydamoure extended their role as curators.
Daft Punk won six Grammys, including Best Electronic/Dance Album for Alive 2007 and Album and Record of the Year honours in 2014 for Random Access Memories and Get Lucky. They confirmed their split on 22 February 2021 through Epilogue, ending a 28-year partnership. Their enduring DJ and live legacy lies in the way club music, spectacle and a carefully sustained anonymous persona were made inseparable.
