About Carl Craig

Carl Craig is the Detroit-born American DJ, producer and label founder whose work places him among the leading figures of Detroit techno's second generation. He began releasing music in 1989 through aliases including Psyche, BFC, 69, Paperclip People and Innerzone Orchestra, developing an atmospheric, synth-heavy approach that draws on soul, jazz, new wave, industrial and Krautrock. In 1991 he founded Planet E Communications, a label that has also released music by Kevin Saunderson, Moodymann and Kenny Larkin.

His debut album Landcruising arrived in 1995 and is regarded by some as one of dance music's major albums. Craig's relationship with Detroit's flagship electronic-music festival has been especially significant: he was artistic director of the Detroit Electronic Music Festival from 2000 to 2001 and returned to the role in 2010. His career has repeatedly stretched techno beyond conventional club formats, including Recomposed with Moritz von Oswald for Deutsche Grammophon, Unity with Green Velvet, and the Party/After-Party immersive sound-and-light installation.

The installation was exhibited at The Geffen Contemporary at MOCA Los Angeles in 2023. He received a Grammy nomination for his remix of Junior Boys' Like a Child, and the documentary Desire, the Carl Craig Story premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival in 2024. Craig remains a DJ and curator whose Detroit foundation supports exploratory, cross-disciplinary electronic work.
