Boris S.
Boris S., born Boris Schalk in Heidelberg in 1979, is a German hard techno DJ and producer regarded as one of the defining figures in the early Schranz sound and a pioneer of the early-2000s hard techno movement. He began producing tracks at 14 after growing up on Kraftwerk and Depeche Mode, first releasing on trance labels before shifting into DJing and developing the harder, driving style associated with Schranz. Boris S.
founded the labels Skull Tunes, Frown and Synopsis, using them to release material that helped shape the genre's raw aesthetic during its formative years alongside contemporaries such as Chris Liebing, credited with coining the Schranz term. He also worked on early Schranz-era productions with Felix Kröcher before stepping away from public performing for roughly nine and a half years. Boris S.
returned with new hard techno releases including the 2026 EP Kaputt on Techno Germany Records, resuming both production and DJ activity after his hiatus. His return has been covered by German techno press as a comeback of a genuine pioneer of the country's hardtechno scene, reconnecting him with the underground audience he helped build in the genre's early years.
