Anthony Rother
Anthony Rother is a German electro producer and DJ from Friedberg, Hesse, who released his debut album, Sex with the Machines, on Kanzleramt in 1997 before founding his own label, Psi49Net, in 1998 as an outlet dedicated exclusively to electro. Rother treats electro and techno as distinct ideologies rather than one being a subcategory of the other, and his music is often described as dystopian, politically grounded and technologically focused, delivered through hybrid DJ and live electro sets. He also founded Datapunk, a label for more melodic and emotional material, though he later stepped back from that imprint around the creation of his Verbalizer album. Rother has worked as a co-producer with Sven Vath, DJ Hell and Karl Bartos, remixed tracks by Aux88 and Ellen Allien, and been remixed himself by Underground Resistance, ties that place him within the Frankfurt and Offenbach techno and electro lineage tied to Vath's Cocoon circle. His catalogue also includes Simulationszeitalter in 2000 and Hacker, part of a body of work built around message-driven, machine-themed concepts that has made him a recurring reference point for electro's harder, more overtly political wing within German electronic music.
