Amon Tobin — IDM & Nu Jazz DJAmon Tobin
Amon Tobin is a Brazilian-born electronic musician and DJ who began performing live in clubs alongside fellow Ninja Tune artists after the release of his second album, Bricolage. Rather than adapting his studio productions to a live band format, Tobin worked with turntables, an approach he felt matched his production method more closely, and he became known for building custom Dolby Digital 7.1 surround-sound speaker systems for his shows.
He contributed the fourth installment of Ninja Tune's long-running Solid Steel mix series, released as Solid Steel Presents Amon Tobin in 2004, drawing on drum and bass, hip-hop, and material from his own catalogue reworked for club play. In 2011 he developed the ISAM live show, a fully electronic audiovisual production built around video-mapping projected onto a large cubic stage structure from which he performed, a concept that extended his DJ-era stagecraft into a more elaborate live format.
His catalogue spans IDM, nu jazz, trip hop, musique concrète, and drum and bass, and his mixing style has long emphasized audio manipulation of sampled source material over straightforward track selection. Tobin has remained active since the mid-1990s, moving between DJ sets, radio mixes, and large-scale production work.
