Above & Beyond
Above & Beyond is the electronic trio of English members Jono Grant and Tony McGuinness with Finnish member Paavo Siljamäki. Grant and Siljamäki met at the University of Westminster in 1999 and founded Anjunabeats before McGuinness joined them in 2000. The group's name first appeared on their remix of Chakra's Home, which received BBC Radio 1 support from Pete Tong.
Their DJ sets and remixes connect trance, vocal trance, progressive house and electronic music with sleek rhythms, filmic textures and song-based writing. They have been particularly associated with vocal-trance remixes and with an acoustic project that reconnects their dance material to its original musical foundations. Anjunabeats has provided a durable platform for that community, while their Group Therapy radio show and event series have become a principal outlet for their programming.
Milestone gatherings have included ABGT100, ABGT500 and ABGT700. The trio has also received a Grammy nomination in the Best Dance Recording category. Above & Beyond's work as DJs is inseparable from their role as curators: through Anjunabeats and Group Therapy, Grant, McGuinness and Siljamäki have built recurring spaces for melodic, emotionally detailed electronic music.
