Swanky Tunes
Swanky Tunes are the Russian electronic act formed in Smolensk in 1998 by Vadim Shpak and Dmitry Burykin; some accounts also list Stanislav Zaytsev as a member. The group initially used a Russian-language name, changing it to English in 1999 to make it more accessible internationally. Their debut album, Streamline, arrived on the Russian label Uplifto Records in 2006, the same period in which they received the Dance Music Awards in Russia's Best Musical Group honour in both 2006 and 2007.
Swanky Tunes' early sound combined techno with vintage synthesisers, before developing a stronger big-beat influence and incorporating 1980s electro and progressive house. Their later work has ranged across pop and dance, with the group describing itself as multi-genre producers; the 2017 Get Swanky EP was presented in that spirit. Before 2012, they also collaborated closely with Hard Rock Sofa, whose Alexander Shapovalov is Vadim Shpak's cousin.
A 2011 electronic cover of The Stooges' “I Wanna Be Your Dog” underlines the breadth of their reference points. Swanky Tunes bring a long-running Russian dance-music perspective to a DJ-oriented catalogue, moving from techno and retro electronics into contemporary house and wider crossover territory while retaining an interest in energetic, synthesiser-led sound design.
