Richie Hawtin

Richard Hawtin is a British-Canadian DJ born in Banbury, Oxfordshire, raised in LaSalle, Ontario and later based in Berlin. Mentored by Scott Go-Go Gordon at The Shelter in Detroit, he co-founded Plus 8 Records with John Acquaviva in 1990 and became a leading minimal-techno figure under the Plastikman name from 1993. His DJ and live work combines minimal techno with acid techno, IDM and Detroit techno, often extending into audiovisual installation. Hawtin launched M-nus Records in 1998 and later built the ENTER.

His documented sets also include an eleven-hour performance with Ricardo Villalobos at Robert Johnson in Offenbach in 2004 and a Plastikman appearance at New York's Solomon R.

Guggenheim Museum in November 2013. He played Life Fest in Windsor in 2001 and composed and scored music for the 2006 Winter Olympics opening ceremony. Hawtin won the DJ Awards prize for Best Techno DJ in 2002, 2006 and 2008, and received an Honorary Doctorate of Music Technology from the University of Huddersfield in 2015. Across club sets, labels and immersive presentations, his work has consistently treated DJing as both a technical practice and an evolving form of electronic performance.
