John Acquaviva

John Acquaviva, born in Orsara di Puglia, Italy, and raised in Canada, launched his career after moving to Detroit, where he met Richie Hawtin at the club The Shelter, the venue where Hawtin himself had been mentored by Scott “Go-Go” Gordon. Acquaviva and Hawtin founded Plus 8 Records together in 1989, releasing the label's first records, “Elements of Tone” and “We Shall Overcome,” in May 1990, and Acquaviva has remained on the international DJ circuit continuously since the label's founding. He performed under the name J'acquaviva+8 during this period, and in 1993 he co-founded a second label, Definitive Recordings, with Hawtin and Karl Kowalski, later relaunching it in 2005 alongside entertainment attorney Mark Quail; Definitive Recordings became known for a distinctive tech house sound and produced multiple number-one club tracks. Acquaviva reached his commercial peak in 2006, placing number 22 on that year's DJ Mag Top 100 poll, a high point built on decades of DJ touring rooted in the Detroit-Windsor techno corridor he helped establish alongside Hawtin. His career bridges the founding era of Detroit-adjacent techno labels with a sustained international DJ touring profile that has continued across more than three decades since Plus 8's first releases.
