Dubfire — House & Techno DJ/Label BossDubfire
Ali Shirazinia, known as Dubfire, is an Iranian American DJ whose work moves through house, techno, minimal and progressive house. Born in Iran in 1971, he moved to the Washington, D.C. area at seven. In 1991 he formed Deep Dish with Sharam Tayebi, a partnership that brought a Grammy Award in 2002 for their remix of Dido's Thank You.
When the two artists pursued separate solo careers, Dubfire developed a more minimal, techno- and house-focused sound than the progressive house associated with Deep Dish. His selections and productions draw on classic hip hop, dub, industrial music and Washington, D.C. punk, including Fugazi and Minor Threat, creating a club identity with a tougher, stripped-back edge. In 2007, RibCage became the first release on Loco Dice's Desolat label, while Emissions was signed by Richie Hawtin to Minus.
That same year he launched his own label, SCI+TEC, or Science + Technology Digital Audio, and he also made a mix for BBC Radio 1's Essential Mix. His accomplishments include Beatport's Best Minimal Artist and Best Techno Artist awards and International DJ Magazine's Player of the Year in 2008. Alongside his Deep Dish Grammy, these milestones place his long-running DJ career at the intersection of club tradition, technologically minded minimalism and durable house and techno programming.
