Chicane
Chicane is the professional name of Nick Bracegirdle, an English DJ, producer and composer whose career began in 1995 and helped define Balearic-inspired progressive trance through singles including "Offshore," "Sunstroke" and "Saltwater." The latter, a reworking of "Theme from Harry's Game" featuring re-recorded vocals from Clannad's Máire Brennan, became a UK top-ten hit, while "Don't Give Up," featuring Bryan Adams, reached number one on the UK singles chart and crossed into mainstream European and Australian charts. Bracegirdle also recorded as Disco Citizens alongside Leo Elstob, producing less radio-friendly, progressive house-leaning material distinct from his work under the Chicane name. His tenth studio album, Trampolines, was released in 2024, followed by a beatless version the following year, and his 2000 single "Don't Give Up" was reissued by Armada alongside a new version of "Oxygen" featuring Ben Nicky and Arty. Chicane has continued performing live, staging an orchestral show at London's Royal Festival Hall and reuniting his band for a headline date at Shepherds Bush Empire in September 2025, alongside more conventional club and festival DJ dates such as XOYO Birmingham. Now splitting his time between Scotland and the French Alps, Bracegirdle has sustained a three-decade career that moved from home studio productions on limited equipment to a catalog recognized as foundational to the mid-1990s British trance and progressive house sound.
