Aphrodite

Aphrodite is the stage name of Gavin King, a British drum and bass and jungle DJ and producer born in Aberystwyth, Wales in 1968, who has also performed under the names A-Zone and DJ Aphro. King began using the Aphrodite name while running parties at the University of Warwick in 1988, and it later became the name of his own label, Aphrodite Recordings.

Before establishing his solo profile, he was half of the breakbeat hardcore duo Urban Shakedown alongside DJ/producer Micky Finn, scoring a UK top-40 hit with “Some Justice” in 1992, a track notable for being produced using two Amiga 500 computers. His debut solo album, released in 1999 on V2 Recordings, cemented his standing within jungle and drum and bass, a scene he has continued to shape through both his own DJ sets and the artists released on Aphrodite Recordings.

King has released material across labels including Urban Takeover, Aladdin and UMG, and continues to perform DJ sets built around the breakbeat-driven, bass-heavy sound he helped pioneer in the early 1990s UK rave scene. With a DJ and production career spanning over three decades, Aphrodite remains a reference figure within British jungle and drum and bass.
